Can You Safely Use PDRN with Red Light Therapy?

IN THIS ARTICLE

PDRN is a buzzy skincare ingredient that is derived from salmon DNA. It can be used topically as an ingredient in a serum or injected into the skin through microneedling and offers benefits like wound healing, lightening hyperpigmentation, and boosting of collagen production. Red Light Therapy is a minimally invasive treatment that uses red light and near-infrared light to penetrate the skin at various levels to treat skincare concerns like mild blemishes and fine lines.

In conjunction, PDRN and Red Light Therapy can work well together to boost skincare effects like skin healing and increased collagen production.

What Is PDRN?

Over the last year, PDRN, just like exosomes have been top of mind in the beauty space, but what is it actually? In the most basic sense, this ingredient, short for Polydeoxyribonucleotide, is made out of DNA fragments that are extracted primarily from sperm cells of salmon (or sometimes trout). Studies have found that PDRN has wound healing properties and also promotes soft tissue regeneration, builds collagen and can treat skin issues like hyperpigmentation. These qualities have made PDRN a sought after ingredient for skincare treatments both in topical serums and as injections particularly because this salmon DNA also works well with human DNA.

What Is Red Light Therapy?

LED Red light therapy (RLT) is a common skincare treatment offered both at spas and through at-home devices like the LumaLux Face Neck and Dec and the LumaLux Dome Face and Body.  Red Light Therapy utilizes near-infrared and low-level red light to achieve a slew of skincare results. Here’s how it works: RLT uses specific light wavelengths to target and treat skincare concerns including mild blemishes, skin healing, signs of aging like fine lines and it supports collagen production.

In fact, according to a study, the use of a red light therapy mask showed a “15.6 percent decrease in the depth of crow's feet wrinkles after 28 days of red light therapy mask use.” With minimal risk and downtime, it’s become a favorite. Red light therapy has many benefits. The red light, which penetrates the skin at 630 to 660 nanometers, helps to boost collagen and elastin production, improve skin texture, calm inflammation, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. While many masks also include infrared or near-infrared, there are some differences between the two.

In short, near-infrared, which penetrates deeper into the skin at 810 to 850 nanometers, can target muscles and joints and is commonly used for wound healing, hair regrowth, and improvement of cell health since it can stimulate the mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell.

Can You Use PDRN With Red Light Therapy?

Yes, red light therapy can be used with PDRN, and it’s often combined with other skincare products. In fact, in conjunction, red light can help boost the effects of PDRN and speed up healing and reduce inflammation if used in injected form. Additionally, both promote collagen production and cellular repair, which is an added benefit if that is specifically what someone is seeking in a treatment involving the two.

What Are the Benefits of Combining PDRN and RLT?

As noted above, these two treatments work very well together. Combining them can lead to more collagen production since both are known to boost collagen regeneration, leading to firmer and more plump skin. In fact, according to this study, “we lose 1 percent of collagen each year after the age of 25.”  Red Light Therapy, especially when using near-infrared, can speed up wound healing, so if the PDRN treatment involves microneedling, adding the use of a red light face mask can cut downtime for healing. Also, PDRN’s molecules can penetrate deeper into the skin while red light therapy focuses more on the dermis or outer layer of skin, allowing for a more comprehensive and targeted treatment.

How Do You Use PDRN and RLT Together Safely?

Red Light Therapy is generally safe since it’s a non-invasive, pain-free option that supports long-term skin health with minimal risk or downtime. However, it must be noted that for people with increased photosensitivity, those who are pregnant and those who are breastfeeding shouldn’t use red light therapy. Also, overuse or misusing red light therapy devices can lead to dryness, increased skin sensitivity, or irritation, especially in people who already have sensitive skin.

If trying this out at home, the LumaLux Face Mask works well as its zone coverage has more LEDs than the industry average, featuring 800 high-grade LED chips across the mask to make sure the areas you will later apply PDRN to are evenly targeted with RLT. Additionally, in total, the LumaLux Face Mask includes five wavelengths and eight combination modes, including red, infrared, and deep infrared, which have been clinically proven to be the most powerful anti-aging combination.

So for those who are able to use RLT, this is a safe and effective way to use the LumaLux Face Mask alongside a PDRN serum. Here’s a step-by-step.

  1. Clean the LumaLux Face Mask before use
  2. Cleanse your face with a gentle face wash (make sure there are no actives like AHAs or BHAs in your cleanser) and pat dry
  3. Connect the mask to the controller
  4. Put the face mask on, making sure to secure it
  5. Press the power button and hold for two seconds to turn the mask on
  6. The mask’s default setting is red + infrared + deep infrared. Ideally, you’ll have it set to red. To adjust this, press the mode button.
  7. After 3 minutes, the device will power down.
  8. With clean hands, apply your PDRN serum of choice, followed by the rest of your AM or PM skin care.
  9. Make sure to clean your device before storing it.
